The World Health Organisation, WHO, has warned that further escalation in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could result in a humanitarian catastrophe.
WHO Regional Office for Europe gave the warning in a statement on Thursday.
“Any further escalation could result in a humanitarian catastrophe in Europe, including a significant toll in terms of casualties as well as further damage to already fragile health systems,’’ the office said.
The WHO said the situation was particularly worrying in light of the Coronavirus pandemic and an ongoing polio outbreak in the country.
“Health workers, hospitals, and other facilities must never be a target and be allowed to continue to serve the health needs of communities.
“The protection of civilians is an obligation under international humanitarian law,’’ the regional office said.
