. The 100 megawatt system is designed to fix critical electricity supply issues in Australia
Tesla has built the world’s largest lithium ion battery to help tackle power cuts in South Australia.
The “world’s largest lithium-ion battery” will “help the state avert crippling electricity blackouts that have spurred a nationwide debate about security of energy supply”, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The 100 megawatt system will allow the power grid to manage increased demand during summer peak periods, when air conditioning creates additional demand.
The South Australian government is “yet to say how much it would pay for the battery, which is part of a A$510m [£290m] plan … to help keep the lights on following a string of blackouts over the past 18 months”, Reuters says.
However, the ABC reports “taxpayers will spend up to $50m subsidising the 100-megawatt battery”.
When signing the agreement to build the battery, Tesla chief Elon Musk guaranteed that the facility would be operational within 100 days, or it would be free.
