Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal to help Nottingham Forest defeat his former club Liverpool in a shocking victory at the City Ground on Saturday afternoon.
Fresh out of the consecutive victories against Manchester City and West Ham United, Liverpool were hoping for an easy ride against struggling Forest but only to be punished by a former player.
The first half of the encounter saw sloppy play from both Nottingham Forest and Liverpool; they struggled to find the back of the net to end the Liverpool-dominated half goalless.
Liverpool continued their domination in the encounter but exactly ten minutes into the second half, Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi tapped the ball into the net as it struck the post to give Forest the lead.
With more that 75 per cent possession, Liverpool were unable to find an equaliser as Awoniyi’s goal secured the important high profile victory for Nottingham Forest, who have lost seven of their 12 league games this season.
The result gives Forest their second win of the campaign as they move to 19th on the table with one point above Leicester City that are yet to play their own game.
Meanwhile the defeat handed Liverpool their third of the season as Jürgen Klopp’s struggles to find their rhythm continues.
