Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, representing the Bauchi Central senatorial district, has resigned as the chair of the Northern Senators Forum.
The decision was disclosed on Monday via a letter addressed to the forum secretary at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, citing unfolding events within the National Assembly and the broader northern region as the primary reasons behind his decision.
The resignation ended Mr Ningi’s eight-month tenure at the helm of the influential legislative caucus.
I will like to specially thank members of the forum for the opportunity given to me for the last eight months to spearhead this very important forum,” he wrote in his resignation letter. “I believe this forum is very important and fundamental to the progress and development of Northern Nigeria.”
The resignation came amid heightened political tension and uncertainty within the National Assembly and the northern region.
While Mr Ningi did not explicitly mention the specific events that led to his decision, political observers speculate that recent disagreements and power struggles within the National Assembly may have played a significant role.
