President Bola Tinubu has directed a thorough investigation into the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, which has claimed 35 lives.
The incident, initially reported to have killed 32 children on Wednesday, rose to 35 by Thursday.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said, “This is a deeply painful moment for the entire nation.
I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the families enduring this unimaginable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we mourn this tragic occurrence together.”

He called on the Oyo State Government to review safety measures for public events, stressing, “This heartbreaking event underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review of safety protocols at all public gatherings.
“Regular safety audits and the strict enforcement of safety regulations must become standard practice to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
Tinubu also urged event organisers nationwide to prioritise children’s safety, affirming, “Our children’s safety and well-being remain paramount. No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives.”
The President concluded with prayers, saying, “May the Almighty comfort the grieving families and bring healing to the injured.”
