Manchester United scored once in both halves to overcome Liverpool 2-1 in their English Premier League (EPL) clash at Old Trafford on Monday night.
In a match involving two sides who are winless in the three-week-old season, it was Man United that secured their first win, thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.
Mohamed Salah, however, scored Liverpool’s consolation goal.
Manchester United had Casemiro, their latest signing, watching in the directors’ box while his new teammates defeated a depleted and off-form Liverpool side.
A seemingly rejuvenated Man United had Liverpool on the back foot for most of the game and should have taken the lead when Anthony Elanga hit the post.
The goal eventually came through Sancho who was given the freedom to swivel in the penalty area and beat a defender before placing his shot in the corner.
Rashford added the second on 53 minutes when he was put through on goal by substitute Anthony Martial and the English striker finished with aplomb to end his goal drought — his first goal in all competitions since January.
Liverpool mounted a late revival and halved the deficit through Salah’s header off a rebound after David De Gea saved an initial Fabio Carvalho shot.
Man United’s usually porous defense, however, stood resolute to ensure their first victory against Liverpool since 2018 and confirmed Jurgen Klopp’s side’s first league loss of 2022.
The Red Devils, who lost their first two matches to Brighton and Brentford, move above Liverpool in the EPL table.
