Court Orders Police To Pay N6 Million For Illegal Raids

Osun High Court on Wednesday awarded N6 million damages against the police for fundamental human rights violations of two Nigerians.

The court ordered the police to pay the sum as compensation to Yusuf Adepoju and Muddathir Kewudirorun, for abusing their fundamental rights.

Justice A. Oyebiyi gave the order during a judgment in suit number HOS/ M. 157/2021. The judge held that the applicants proved their case against the police beyond a reasonable doubt.

The duo alleged that the police, without any prior invitation, invaded their homes at 3:00 a.m. on November 16, 2021, for unknown reasons.

Mr Oyebiyi held that infringement on the fundamental rights of innocent civilians was against the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The judge explained that the applicants’ privacy and that of other members of their families were threatened by the police during the illegal raid.
